Nowadays there’s a club for just about any interest you may have. Whether you like to knit, ski, read, jog or fly kites, chances are there are other enthusiastic people getting together to share tips, stories and how to do more of what you love.
This weekend, my husband and I attended the South Florida Bloggers meetup at Books & Books in Coral Gables. This group was formed a few months ago with the goal of getting local bloggers together to share ideas and form community around blogging. We attended for two reasons: 1. I wanted to meet other bloggers and 2. The guest speaker was Jared Easley, a big time podcaster (Starve the Doubts podcast) who was there to talk about converting your blog into a podcast.
As I was waiting for the event to start, I thought of how different of a person I am today then I was just a year ago. Ever since co-creating the No Meat Athlete-Miami running group, I’ve made it a point to engage more in the community by attending various events and joining different groups. I joined a book club and became a Yoga Gangster. I co-created a podcast (Planted in Miami) and with that have been forced to reach out to strangers to ask to interview them and in turn have made tons of new friends. I’ve put myself out there and the effect on me has been transformational. I’ve found a new confidence and enthusiasm for life. I’ve learned new skills and have set different goals for growth.
Basically, I’ve created a new direction in my life that I would have never explored if I didn’t come from a place of yes. There’s a book by Bethenny Frankel called “A Place of Yes: 10 Rules for Getting Everything You Want Out of Life” and for rule #3 she advises to ‘Act on it’. She emphasizes that things just don’t happen to you unless you make them happen for you. “Forward is always the right direction, even if you aren’t sure where you are going.”
So what is that thing you’ve been wanting to do but keep finding excuses not to do. Even if you’re shy and introverted, look for a group or organization that you feel comfortable with and give it a shot.
A great place to start is on meetup.com, where tons of events are posted every day around town and in various groups. And who cares if you don’t enjoy it, pat yourself on the back for trying and find something else. You have control over your life and by putting yourself out there and forcing yourself outside your comfort zone, you will expand your mind and grow in ways unimaginable. But you have to make the first move.
If you are a blogger or podcaster or are interested in creating either one, I invite you to join the South Florida Bloggers group and/or the South Florida Podcasters group. Both groups consist of some incredibly talented people who are inspiring and motivating.
