I think it’s pretty funny that two weeks ago I wrote about ‘Getting Back on Track’ after my running accident and the very next day I got sick. But I’m not talking about your occasional head cold. I’m talking about chills, fever, can’t get out of bed sick. It’s been a very long time since that’s happened to me and I’m pretty sure it’s because of my epic sailing adventure that you can hear all about here. We got caught in a rainstorm and I had to quickly earn my sea legs.
But anywho, I’m finally starting to feel better just in time for my birthday! Yes, August 12 marks the day I was brought into this magnificent world. When I was a kid, I hated having my birthday in August because I couldn’t celebrate it in school like everyone else. Plus, I thought it was the most boring month to celebrate because nothing else happens in August. So of course, whenever I find out that someone shares my birthday month I get overly excited.
And come to find out, I’m in good company.
Barack Obama- August 4
Lucille Ball- August 6
Whitney Houston – August 9
Hulk Holgan –August 11
Halle Berry- August 14
Magic Johnson- August 14
Madonna- August 16
Robert DeNiro- August 17
Bill Clinton- August 19
Usain Bolt –August 21
Kobe Bryant –August 23
Cameron Diaz –August 30
The list goes on and on. Pretty cool people born in a not so cool month ;) My plans for my big day is the same thing I’ve done for years… an entire day of self-care. I’ve spoken on here before about the importance of taking time for yourself to recharge and reconnect. My day usually starts with some yoga and then serious pampering, maybe a massage, facial, whatever. It really doesn’t matter what I do as long as it’s something to slow down and take stock of having the privilege of celebrating another birthday.
I’m not afraid to say that I will be turning 37. I actually love getting older. I may have more grey hairs and I’m not hip on the latest trends but what I lack in youth, I gain tremendously in self-awareness. All we can hope for each year is the ability to grow from our experiences and I feel successful in that respect. I’m a big time planner of events but I’ve learned that it’s the events that aren’t planned for that affect us the most. It's those moments in between that challenge and shape our character.
'Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.'- Mark Twain.
If you’re celebrating a birthday this month, let me know and I’ll add you to my list!
