Back in December 2014, I wrote a blog about creating community with the newly formed No Meat Athlete-Miami running group. On our first meetup last October, we had five people show up to run. Fast forward less than a year later and we have over 220 members on Facebook and routinely get 20-30 people showing up to each run.
The goal of connecting vegans, vegetarians and veg-curious folks is definitely working. This Sunday, we all got together to run an easy 3 miles on the Hollywood Boardwalk and afterwards enjoyed smoothies and fresh squeezed juices from Josh’s Organic Juice Bar. Our special guest, professional ultra-marathoner, Chad Weller, spoke to the group about his tips on training for races and how to beat the heat. If you would like to hear his background story of how he went from modeling in Italy to running over 100 mile races, listen here.
As I looked around and saw the friendships that have formed because of this group, it made my heart smile. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that starting this group would enrich my life so much. It’s not all about what type of diet/lifestyle we subscribe to; it’s about connection and the desire to be the best version of ourselves. We have many people who show up that are looking to make changes in their life and don’t know where to get started. We have a no-judgement policy that makes people feel welcome. And there are many people who are very educated about a healthy lifestyle that are more than willing to share their knowledge. We support each other’s events, goals and dreams. What more could we ask for?
If you are interested in learning more about transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, I encourage you to join the No Meat Athlete-Miami Facebook group and come out to one of our runs.
