Do you remember, back in the day, when you would rent a
videotape from Blockbuster and the big bold sticker on the front would read: Be
kind and rewind? It was my job to
collect the tapes dropped off each night and place them in one of the rewinders
set up throughout the store. On the weekends, Blockbuster would feel like a nightclub with people hanging around
waiting for someone to drop off the latest must see movie. I couldn’t get the tapes prepped fast
It was always such a relief when I would open the box to see that not only was the correct videotape returned but that it had also been rewound. Such a simple joy but one that made my job a tad less stressful. (P.S. If you don’t remember Blockbuster or renting a videotape…Google it ;)
This memory of my high school job came to me today as I parked my car in a shopping center. I had to drive around for a bit
to find a space not occupied by a shopping cart. I’ve been guilty of doing this myself; being
too lazy or in a rush to push my cart out of the way. Sometimes, I see a store employee with this
contraption that allows them to line up what seems like a hundred carts to
bring them back into the store. I’m sure
that in the brutal Miami summer heat, going outside to collect the carts isn’t
a highlight of their day.
So for today’s Random Act of Kindness, I rounded up as many carts as I could and returned them back to their respective stores. Just as those people who were kind enough to rewind their tapes gave me a momentary relief, I’m hoping that even one less minute in the sun could provide the same for these store clerks. Our lives are all connected and the more we help each other out, even in the most simplest of ways, the better off we will be.
Now it's your turn. OM the moment for your soul and return some shopping carts this week. Not only will you be doing a random act of kindness for the store employees, but the carts won't be in the way to possibly damage cars or take up valuable parking spaces. We all win!
