Random Act of Kindness 4/3/13

Choose being kind over being right and you’ll be right every time.
— Richard Carlson

I get off on the same highway exit every day to get to my house and there is always traffic.  It appears that the traffic light only allows about three cars to go through at a time so I’m usually stuck bumper to bumper with my fellow drivers. This of course is the perfect recipe for those wanting to capture an audience.  Sometimes there are kids collecting money for their school or sports team, other times there are struggling musicians passing out their cd’s and giving compliments to weary drivers (I was one lucky recipient).

But without fail, regardless of rain or shine, there is a family of three selling flowers.  I’m not sure what time they start in the morning because I don’t see them when I leave around 7:30am but they are always there when I get home regardless of the time.  I’ve even seen them working late into the night on weekends. I’m talking about 10pm, still offering a smile and wink when I politely refuse the roses.  In the brutal Miami heat, I can only imagine what a hard days work that is.

So for today’s Random Act of Kindness I decided to treat these kind folks to a meal on me.  I went to Subway and got three gift cards and pulled over to speak to the woman who had taken a break under a tree.  Since they don't speak English, I decided not to give them a kindness card and just told her that I see her working hard everyday and I wanted to treat them to a meal.  She was smiling from ear to ear.

One of the things I love most about doing Random Acts of Kindness is connecting with people, even for just a few minutes, to share a moment of joy. How will you OM the moment for your soul this week? Is there someone that you see everyday that could use some uplifting?  Start to pay attention to the folks you come across everyday.  Spread joy.
