Long Line, Short Tempers

My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.

I came up with the idea for today’s Random Act of Kindness from waiting in a looooong line at Marshall’s. For some reason, this particular store gets what feels like the entire population of Miami.  As I stood there trying to balance my purse, clothes and whatever other accoutrements I’m carrying around, I hear a tiny voice in my head reminding me to ‘live your yoga.’ This little reminder shifts my attention from being agitated and stressed to focusing on yoga.

For instance, I’ll start to notice my breath and take slow inhales and exhales through my nose, sometimes counting to a certain number and making sure I keep my breath long and steady.  Other times I’ll work on my posture, rolling my shoulders back and down my spine, tucking my belly in and tilting my tailbone. Every single time I shift my perspective to yoga, my awareness is heightened to my surroundings.  I can hear sounds more clearly and notice the emotions and attitudes of those around me. My Jedi skills are on point.  Next time you are in line or stuck in traffic  try “living your yoga” and let me know what you experience.

Back to me waiting in line, so there I am ‘living my yoga’ and seeing people get more stressed by the minute. I got this idea to write an encouraging message on a sticky note, slap it on top of a RAOK card and place them around stores for people to find while shopping.  I had more errands to run, so I decided to write out a few sticky notes (I’m still in line) and attach them to the cards. Right away I was filled with excitement and when it was my turn at the register, I was happy as can be with my new plan.

Can you guess which stores I left the cards in?

I look forward to hearing from you on your latest Random Act of Kindness or let me know if you’ve been a recipient of one.  Leave your comments/stories/suggestions below.
